Overview

  1. Practices are events held to teach or practice martial skills.
  2. Training sessions are activities within a larger event, such as classes, to teach or practice martial skills.

Requirements to hold a practice

As per the requirements of Corpora:

  1. To be an official practice, it must be:
    1. sponsored by a branch of the Society,
    2. registered with the Seneschal of the sponsoring branch,
    3. publicised to at least the members of that branch,
    4. and conducted according to Society rules.
  2. A member must be appointed by the sponsoring branch to be responsible for the general conduct of the event. For practices, this is likely to be the marshal-in-charge.
    1. This person needs to ensure that any required waivers, rosters and sign-in sheets are collected and forwarded to the relevant officer.
  3. Each martial discipline's activities at the practice must have a rostered marshal to be marshal-in-charge for that discipline present at the practice.
  4. If your practice does not meet these requirements, you cannot conduct official SCA business, such as conducting authorisations.

Requirements to attend a practice

  1. You are not required to wear pre-17th century dress at practices.
  2. You are expected to behave in an appropriate and respectful manner.
  3. You must complete any required sign-in documentation that is required for events.
  4. If you are a minor (under the age of majority in the jurisdiction where the practice is held),
    1. You must either have a parent or nominated caregiver on site of the practice, and able to be reached easily and immediately.

Authorisations

  1. You do not need an authorisation to participate in martial activities at a practice or training session, as these are where you learn and practice the skills required to become competent so that you can authorise.
  2. Authorisations can be conducted at official practices as they are official SCA activities.

??

  1. For training activities that do not include full contact combat,

  1. Fighting training activities are permitted to occur with weapons and equipment that do not meet the standards required for combat. In this situation, participants are required to adapt to the increased risk with appropriate mitigation strategies as approved by the Marshal-in-charge of the training event. These strategies may include but are not limited to:
  • Reduced speed (eg "slow work")
  • Reduced power
  • Substitute targets (a pell, for instance)
  • No targets (eg footwork drills)
  • Padded weapon analogues (eg boffers)

These allowances may only be employed during nominated training sessions and do not supersede the rules for regular combat activities. Participants in training sessions do not need to hold any prior combat authorisation to participate, but they do need to prove their insurance indemnity (through SCA annual membership or event membership).

  1. Some training activities can safely be participated in without full protective equipment.
    1. pell
    2. slow work?
  2. What can I do with boffer weapons or other weapon analogues that otherwise don't meet equipment standards?
