Equestrian Draft:Crest Combat

  1. This event involves two armoured combatants, with crest affixed to their helms riding their horses isolated within a visual 15 x 15 m barrier.
  2. Because of the close proximity of the horses rubbing and coming in contact ONLY the horses and their riders are allowed within this space. Foot attendants will remain on the outside.
  3. Two mounting blocks are recommended at each opposing corner within the list field.
  4. Riders must be equipped with a properly fitted helm (minimum 18 gauge); fencing masks are acceptable.
  5. Crests for mounted crest combat must be at least 5 inches in height, made of material that if stepped on or crushed will not injure a horse, and affixed in such a way that when struck by a moderate blow, will be dislodged. Velcro or magnets are two recommendations.
  6. Shields need not be present
  7. PADDED swords or maces are required.
  8. An Inspection of combatants will be conducted prior to the start of the list.
  9. Part of the inspection consists of the helmet crest being dislodged with a moderate blow.

Directions of play

  1. Riders are called forward, “Riders at the ready?”. Both riders signal to the field marshal by raising their swords/maces.
  2. "Lay On". Riders engage each other until a crest is knocked off. Once this has occurred, Hold is called and echoed.
  3. Riders return to their re-set area (mounting block) and crests re-attached, and the process of Riders ready? signaling and command of lay on is given.
  4. This happen three times ( a match) until one rider advances (victor) and the other rider goes to the losers bracket.
  5. Riders are compelled to limit their target area to the helm/crest only.
  6. Should a combatant strike an illegal target, or opponent's horse, they will be cautioned once and eliminated if this happens a second time.
  7. If a crest is dislodged due to rider error, poor attachment method or the combatant's own sword, the victory will go to the opponent. A flaw, or improper design, should not benefit the rider nor cause a safety issue.
